cots and baby equipment wanted for expectant mums

Thanks to those who have recently donated baby clothes, cots and pushchairs. These have now been passed on and been gratefully received.

If you are still thinking about giving away your cot, puschair and other baby equipment, please can you get in touch with us at the Crossway on 0121 426 0070.

We know that we will need at least two more cots, pushchairs and other baby equipment in the next few months. It would be lovely to reassure people who are still pregnant that we will be able to help them in this way.

Prime Time 2011 – a “Holiday Club” for over-70s

Now in its 4th year, Prime Time was once again an excellent week enjoyed by all – guests and helpers alike. 60 guests attended over the 3 days and were spoilt for choice with an exciting selection of sessions on offer each morning and afternoon. Have a look at the photo gallery to see the fun we had listening to music and talks, playing games, using computers and generally enjoying each other’s company. Guests were treated to a superb 3-course meal each day and plenty of tea, coffee and home-made cakes and biscuits in between times. The week concluded with a short service of Thanksgiving led by Revd Antony Spencer.

This event involved about 60 amazing helpers who organised or provided transport, shifted armchairs, welcomed and assisted guests, cooked, served, cleared up or washed up, led sessions, made drinks, organised games, ran the computers and PA, fed the volunteers, took photos, etc etc. Some brought their dogs; some brought their babies! All worked their socks off. But it was well worth it.

Prime Time gives an opportunity for older people in the church and from the local community to have a really enjoyable week together at a time when many people are on holiday and many clubs or activities are closed. It is a way of helping some more isolated older people to enjoy the company of others, and most of all, Prime Time helps older people feel valued and loved.

Already, we are looking forward to next year………

PAC garden clearance working alongside local residents

PAC WITH A DIFFERENCE

This call for help went out in early August:

Could you make yourself free to help a mum who is trying to get residents in her block of flats to help clear a large overgrown communal garden so children can play safely?

For 15 Crossway volunteers the answer was yes!

Working together with local residents they helped to clear a large overgrown communal area of garden.

"Where to start!"

As we worked we uncovered all manner of interesting stuff!

"No sign of this lot when we started"

Along the way we had a lot of fun.

Community Police Residents Meeting at The Crossway

Community Police will be available to meet local residents at The Crossway on Saturday September 10th from 2-4pm.

All are welcome to pop in and chat.

Do you have any concerns that you would like to share with the police to help them create a safe and secure environment for all our community?

“Thank you” from Helping Hands

Helping Hands made their first collection on 12th July and were amazed at our generosity.

There were a total of 629 items of tins and packets of food together with toiletry items.

“This exceeded all our expectations and we can’t thank you enough for your gifts”

Please carry on bringing your gifts of food and toiletries to help those who are struggling to make ends meet.

As well as the collection bins at St John’s Church there is now a collection basket at the Crossway if it is more convenient for you to drop your gift in there.

Launch of Helping Hands link

We have linked up with Helping Hands to help to give food to those who don’t have enough food.

After one week of collecting we had 4 containers and a trolleyload of food that was donated by East End Foods. Fantastic! See photo!

Thank you and please keep bringing tins jars and packets of food and tolietry items.

We know some children who are on free school meals don’t always have enough to eat in the holidays- BBC documentary “Poor Kids”

All food given is collected by Helping Hands and given to families who are referred by the caring professions.

Princes Trust filming at The Crossway

On Tuesday we welcomed a group from Youthspace and Princes Trust to film at The Crossway.

It was great to see them filming so creatively. Haven’t seen the film yet but we’re watching this space!

We also discovered which receptionist wanted to avoid the limelight.

We all face crisis points and difficult periods in our life at one time or another – are you, or a friend or relative, at that point now? You may feel that there is no way out, or you may just need someone to talk to.

The Crossway was established because the people of St John’s Church sensed that God wanted to express his love in a practical way to people in and around Harborne, Birmingham.

Crisis Pregnancy Centre

At the Crisis Pregnancy Centre we seek to enable women and their partners to reach an informed decision that is right for them; based on fact, not fear, panic or pressure. We offer support, information and advice to every person, whatever their circumstances.

Just drop in, or pre-book an appointment

The centre is currently available for drop-in;

Tuesday - 6pm to 8pm
Wednesday – 2pm to 4pm
Thursday - 6pm to 8pm
Friday – 9.30am to 12midday

Dealing with the possibility of an unexpected pregnancy is going to be different for each person, but it is likely to be a very difficult time, throwing up conflicting emotions and responses. It may leave you feeling confused and frightened, daunted by the decisions that need to be made.

The Crisis Pregnancy Team at The Crossway aim to offer you a safe place to talk things through confidentially with an independent, trained advisor and explore all your options. Whether you know you are pregnant, or worried that you might be, we provide you with the opportunity to have a free pregnancy test and to help you think about what the result, whether positive or negative, might mean for you and your partner.

The most important thing for us is to give caring and non-judgemental support and advice so that you have the chance to talk through things honestly and openly. We are trained to listen and help you to understand all your options. Many people come on their own, but we also welcome partners and friends. If your partner wishes to speak to a male advisor, this can be arranged.

We understand that making the right decision for you is not going to be easy. At the Crisis Pregnancy Centre we offer you all the time, support and information that you need to help you to do that.

We are affiliated to Care Confidential. Their website has lots of helpful information, personal stories, and other sources of help, including a helpline.

We are also now partnering with Besure to offer confidential Chlamydia testing.
